The Heat Is On..!!!

Eco frenz discovered that the waste water from the canteen is contaminated with large amount of fat, oil and grease. To achieve our target in reducing the amount of F.O.G . We decided to install a grease trap system in our school. We believed that it is one of the effective ways to reduce fat, oil and grease in the waste water.
Mr Ng, an engineer from Envimech , came to meet the eco Frenz team  to explain and give  more information about the grease trap that is about to be installed.

He explained to us on its component,  function , capability and the advantage of using this system

He also drew the cross sectional diagram of the grease for a better understanding .

Then we were advised by him on where would be the best place to fix it .

An Unforgettable Experience at the Landfill

An Unforgettable Experience at the Landfill.

On 1st Sept, Eco Frenz team had an unforgettable visit to a landfill. Once more we were very lucky to get permission from the Municipal Council, MPSP for our visit. We had  gone to two different  sites that were, Pulau Burung landfill and the transfer station at Ampang Jajar, Seberang Prai Tengah.

Firstly we gathered at the Anggerik room for a briefing by En.Mohd Puad bin Hamid, MPSP officer. Eco Frenz gained many useful information from him.  From his briefing, we got to know that, only 6% from the total waste collected, cannot be recycled. We were also informed,in Penang the estimation for the waste produced for each individual is 1Kg per day which is the second highest waste producer in the country.

What a coincidence, the Health Director Dr.Hj Romli willing to join us for a visit a the Pulau Burung.

An unusual place to take memorable picture. We were the lucky ones...

We were shocked. The scenery was not what we imagined. The place is full of garbage, as if we were stranded at the planet of garbage. Here could see waste was buried between layers of earth.

 Land of garbage !!

We were on top of the landfill.

The smell of the place is also very “nice”. It comes from the methane and hydrogen sulphide gas emitted.

 Leachate pond

Eco Frenz were later brought to a  transfer station at Ampang Jajar .We never noticed the place until we visited it. The waste from the Penang island is sent here first to be compacted before being transport to the Pulau Burung landfill.

Transfer truck getting ready to fill the silo with garbage...

 Oh My... Mostly plastics...

We were later brought to the leachate pond. Leachate is any liquid that, in passing through matter, extracts solutes, suspended solids or any other component of the material through which it has passed. Activated coal is used to treat the leachate.

3 different colour of water after passing through 3 stages of filtration treatment

The visit was really an eye opener for us. We got so much useful information on waste and we had a better understanding on how the waste was handled. Eco Frenz are really concerned about the negative effects of landfilling such as pollution of groundwater and surface water ,soil contamination
and release of global warming gases.

Everybody has to do their part to REDUCE WASTE.

Before we left Ampang Jajar Solid Waste Transfer Station at 2.30 pm, Eco Frenz  thanked Dr Hj Romli and En Mohd Puad for the visit and spending their valuable time with us.

Visit to recycling centre...

On Saturday the 14th   August , Eco Frenz made a visit to a non-governmental organization , Pusat Kitar Semula  Fo En in Kulim. We went there to get more information on recycling. They  gave a warm welcome to us.
Firstly, they briefed us on their administration and how they run the centres . They operate  three recycling centres in Kulim.

They later  brought us to the centre that collects the recycling materials .  There are big recycling bins where the public can send  things that can be  recycled .

From here the materials will be sent to the segregation center which is located nearby.

The workers  segregate  them according to the type of materials it is made out of.

When the container is full, it will be sold to factories that will recycle the materials .

A container full of aluminiums cans can reach a price of up to  RM3500 .

It was a memorable visit . Even though we were surrounded by mountains of materials that  we initially thought rubbish, we enjoyed ourselves very much.
Guess what… several members of Eco Frenz bought some souvenirs from the recycling centre.  Thyviena bought a music box for three dollars!!!

Before leaving the recycling center , Eco Frenz   gave the Fo En Recycling Centre  the recyclable material that we had collected  from the school  canteen .
Then they brought us to the haemodialysis center where they provide dialysis service with a very cheap cost subsidized by the government , with the money they earn through recycling and donations .
One person's rubbish is another person’s treasure.

Recycled Newspaper Bag...Greener Style!!!

Recycled Newspaper  Bag...Greener Style!!!

Eco Frenz team and Art and Craft club of SMK Dato’ Onn jointly organised a recycled newspaper bag contest. It was during one of the co-curricular period that this contest was held.

All form one, two and four students participated. It was a very interesting activity and the students enjoyed themselves very much.

Boys will alwayz be  boys!!!
Many of us never thought that old newspaper can be turn into an innovative gift.

The contest ended at 8.40 a.m. In 50 minutes time, students managed to produce many pretty bags.
Looks like a jumble sale !!

The judges having a hard time to pick the winners

The activity taught us that other than sending old newspapers to the recycle centre, we can take charge and turn it into useful items!!!
Off shopping with our new bags!!
Our choice is always TOYOTA!!

HOME COMPOSTING STEP 2

HOME COMPOSTING STEP 2

The day finally arrived for our seed compost to be made.

We mixed equal amounts of rice bran and rice husk to form a fermenting bed.

Hanafi and Afiq stir in sugar and salt fermenting solutions bit by bit, adjusting the moisture level to 40% to 60%.

The moisture content is right if the mixture forms a lump without oozing out water when squeezed in the hand.

Store mixture in covered carton box for 3 to 5 days. Mission accomplished.

We were informed that the fermentation is complete when the content is covered with white mould.
Eco Frenz team was confident that the seed compost that we were preparing will turn out well...

Home Composting Workshop by PPSPPA

Home Composting Workshop by PPSPPA

Several officers from PPSPPA, Perbadanan Pengurusan Sisa Pepejal dan Pembersihan Awam Negeri Pulau Pinang, had come to SMKDOB to hold a talk and workshop on home composting. So, Eco frenz members and the hostel students took part in the workshop which was held at the hostel dining hall.

We were briefed and exposed to the Takakura method of food waste composting. Takakura method is introduced by Kitakyusyu International Techno-Cooperative Association (KITA) from Japan. In the Takakura composting method, organic waste is broken down by micro-organisms that are cultivated from local materials.

Eco Frenz team excitedly took part in the making a fermenting solution, with the guidance of PPSPPA officer, of course...

We got to know there were two types of fermenting solutions, salt fermented solution and sugar fermented solution.
The recipe for salt fermented solution... 3 litres of water, 1 heaped tablespoon of salt and mixture of vegetable scraps and fruit peel. That's very simple...
Mix everything in an airtight container and leave for 3 to 5 days for fermentative micro organism to grow.

The smell was nice too... We were told that yoghurt could be added to the mixture to increase its reaction.

The PPSPPA officers will be making several visits to our school to see our progress and show us the next step to prepare seed compost.

Fermenting solution should smell sweet sour and of alcohol. If it smells strange or bad, we have to discard it and do again...

Takakura method of food composting is hygienic and this method does not release any methane gas that leads to global warming.
The students of SMK Dato’ Onn are very fortunate to get the opportunity to learn one method of managing food waste smartly and safely...

A big thanks to PPSPPA. We are looking forward to their next visits.
