Keep the Ball Rolling!!!

Eco Frenz team were certainly elated when Dr Hj Romli, the MPSP director, and several officers came to our school for a visit on 5th August. They came to see about our project and give advice and ideas as we had requested.

We had a brainstorming session on implementing our planned countermeasures.

They made a visit to our project site, the canteen.

Many new ideas popped out from Mr Pubalan....

MPSP with some of the teachers involved in our TEY project

We  were very happy that the visit from MPSP had given us more insight  on carrying out the project.  We appreciate their help and interest  very much.

So, Eco Frenz,.. Keep the ball rolling!!!

"We know the science, we see the threat, and we know the time for action is now."

Here Comes The Bins!

The bins that we had ordered finally arrived!!!
Eco Frenz team were excited and couldn’t wait to start implementing our recycling plan in school.

It ain't heavy because it's our bin!

We noticed that the school Co-op is selling packed drink in tetra pak, plastic bottles and aluminium can. The students would throw them into the ordinary bins that are provided by the canteen operator. So Eco Frenz decided to collect and sent them to the recycling centre.

We placed  the bins at strategic places around the canteen.

 Dancing with the bins?

Just nice...

We hope the students, teachers and staff of SMK Dato Onn will throw away plastic bottles, aluminium can and Tetra Pak that they had bought from the school Co-op during recess.
After school, at around 3 pm in the afternoon, we checked our bins to see how much waste that we managed to collect.

Mmmm... Not bad for first day collection!

We weighed them and recorded the findings. mmm... not much for a day?

500 grams...? Not bad.

Lastly, recording the data.

As we had never done this before, we don’t know how much waste that we could collect at the end of the day. Maybe, after few weeks of collecting the data, Eco Frenz  will get a clearer picture on the amount of waste that we could save to the landfill...

We're doing our part for the ENVIRONMENT
if we
RECYCLE!!!

Facelift...

Facelift…

As the canteen is our project site, Eco Frenz thought it would be nice to change the atmosphere of the present canteen to a better and brighter place.

With that in mind and consultation from our art teacher in the school, Pn Jamilah, Eco Frenz plan to paint the canteen!!!
So, at about 10 am on 17th of July, we started our mission. There were actually two  workers to assist us on the job. They guided and showed us the correct way to paint and the amount of layers we should apply.

It took us two days to finish the work.

We felt very  tired  but it was a new experience for us and we had fun.
Eco Frenz really felt proud  to see the canteen had received a facelift.

Working Together...

Eco Frenz realized that, we will not  be able to make this project a success  if we work alone. We need cooperation and support from everyone in the school. We need the canteen operator to help us in implementing the countermeasures that we planned to carry out at the canteen.

So, the administrator and committee members  of SMK Dato Onn’s canteen held a meeting with the canteen worker. The school administrator gave them a briefing on the school project and asked for cooperation and support.

Eco Frenz also set an appointment to meet the canteen operators  to brief them more clearly on our project.

The talk lasted for an hour. We told them about our plan and what they were supposed to do at the canteen. They asked quite a number of questions  but we don’t mind.

We were very happy and fortunate as the canteen operator willingly gave their support to our project and will help Eco Frenz to win this competition.

Visit to Municipal Council

It was the correct timing for Eco Frenz. On Monday, 26th July, it was a school holiday for SMK Dato’ Onn as we had our Speech Day the previous Saturday. So, Eco Frenz took the opportunity to pay a visit to Seberang Perai Municipal Council in Bandar Perda, Seberang Perai, in the morning. The building looks grand and beautiful. We were in full spirit!!!

We met Dr Hj Romli bin Hj Awang, Director of Municipal Service and Health Department, at his office. He was very friendly and made us feel welcome.

Our advisor, Pn Chek Ramlah, gave a briefing on our TEY project and request for guides and assistance on their part.

Eco Frenz listened attentively and asked Dr Romli lots of questions on how to go about the project. Now we had a better understanding on how to handle waste water and food waste. He also gave suggestions on how we could reduce the pollutants thats being thrown into the drain...

En Pubalan, an administrative officer of MPSP, was very enthuthiastic and gave us brilliant ideas and tips on thing that we could carry out in our project. Hemakkesha was very happy and felt like bringing En Pubalan back to our school...

We took pictures with Dr Ramli and En Pubalan as a remembrance.

Thanks to Dr Ramli and En Pubalan!.. The knowledge and information given are very useful to us. They had been a great help and now we are eager to make further move...

“ONE THING YOU CANNOT RECYCLE IS WASTED TIME....”

Don’t you agree?

The Earth Is Our Only Resource

By cutting back on waste we can save this resource. By following 7 simple eco friendly solutions, you can make a huge impact on our lives and Earth.

7 Simple Eco Friendly Solutions

1. Reuse paper as much as possible

2. Recycle all your papers throughout the day

3. Donate your clothing that you don’t need any more to your favourite charity

4. Shut off your water when not using it (take shower rather than bath)

5. Recycle cans and bottles throughout your school

6. Turn off lights and unplug electronics when not in use
7. Plant a tree

What A Surprise!!!

During the earlier period of understanding the current situation , Eco Frenz had carried out a survey amongst students to find out how much they know about environmental issues.

These are some of  the data that we have obtained,

- only 44% Dato Onn' students know what solid waste is.
- 92% know that certain solid waste are valuable and recyclable.

Unfortunately,
       - only 62 % of the students know that solid waste can change the climate
- only 35% know that a tetra pak can be recycled
- only 22% knows about the impact of fat, oil and grease that is washed into the drain.

Last but not least,
- 61 % of SMK Dato Onn students, do not know how to reduce the solid waste in our school.

The finding certainly will help us in planning our counter measures to overcome the problems. Looks like there will be plenty of work to do for ECO FRENZ but…. we don’t mind...;)
It’s our duty!!!
