We did a trash audit from 28th June to 2nd July to have a better understanding on the situation . After school, we collected all the rubbish from the canteen to be segregated . We separated them into 6 main groups there were separated into plastics , polystyrene , food waste , papers , metals and rubbish . We did that continuously for five consecutive days to get a more accurate reading on the amount of solid waste produced in the canteen .

On the 28th we had a briefing from our teacher about our activity to be done . We divided the work equally among us . We wore a face mask and gloves before starting our work . At first we were very uneasy to do it but we managed to control our feelings for the success of our team. We took nearly three hours to separate 42.5 kg of solid waste . there were 9 kg of plastics , 0.5 kg of rubbish , 1 kg of metal , 5 kg of papers and 27 kg of food waste . We were very sick of doing this work as this was our first experience of handling rubbish ( we had no experience in our life handling rubbish ) . Some unexpected finding is we found a pair of fork and spoon for the first three days .
Though it stinks, we still enjoyed...
Wow , that's heavy!!!
On the next day we were physically and mentally prepared to do our work and this time we took 2 hours to finish them . There were 7.5 kg of plastics , 3.5 kg of papers , 1 kg of metals , 24 kg of food waste and 1.5 kg of rubbish . The total solid waste we managed for the day was 37.5 kg .
On the following days we successfully separated the the solid waste less than 2 hours . We were relieved because we will not be doing this activity for the time being .
What a relief.... its over....for now.
We were shocked to find out that we were throwing a large amount of solid waste to the dump site daily . We were throwing a rough figure of 40 kg of rubbish from our canteen to the land fill daily . Can you imagine how much rubbish we are disposing in a year ??? 14 600 kg of rubbish !!!!!
We hope that everyone will give their support for us to achieve our target to reduce the amount of solid waste being dumped .
